Artist Exploration: Nicole Wermers

Updated: 1 day ago

Wermers is a German sculptural artist working in a collage-like way using objects, clay, and other resources. She was born in 1971, which makes her 52 years old today. When looking through her work, one of my favorites is the Dishwashing Sculpture #16 made in 2024 (fig. 2). I really enjoy the mix of materials; it has a sense of humor to it, being called the dishwashing sculpture and then finding a piece of birch wood in the center. I think I was drawn to this not only because of the arrangement of materials but also because, for some reason, I love ornate plates, specifically the blue and white ones (which, if you didn't know, are called Chinoiserie patterns). I also wanted to include one of her works from a collection called Proposal for a Monument to a Reclining Female. I chose #16 (fig. 3) as I connected to it instantly, seeing the Angel VHS case, as I used to love that show. I think bringing aspects people can connect with is such an amazing aspect of art and something we artists should try to include more of.

As well as sculpture, she also does photography and collage. I really liked this picture/collage she did, as it feels like I'm looking at a sculpture, yet this was done with pictures!

Overall, I think she is a very interesting artist. My sculptural style definitely leans more toward fairy tale, but I have a lot of respect for artists that are able to combine a more abstract sensibility with narrative, which I do think her pieces have.

hear are some links to where her work can be found.
